I come from the South Pacific (Fiji, Samoa and New Zealand) where i guess a lot of my sound revolves around. DUB, FUNK, BREAKS, EXPERIMENTAL, QUIRKY ELECTRONICA (at the same time im open to all music) would best describe the sound I create when making music/remixes.I grew up in a musical family where my Uncle was the head of the music faculty in the University of the South Pacific. I spent some time living in Japan DJing and working with The Lava Project (An electronic funk group). As an electronic artist he has worked with musicians across a broad range of styles (ambient jazz, psychedelic, techno, trance, chill out) and has been a force in the Tokyo underground scene for over a decade. Hataken is straight off the heels of a show at South by Southwest, where he performed with Tokyo-based saxophonist Fujiwara Daisuke and their project Quartzhead.Gunshae is live ambience at its most beguiling.Gunshae is improvised laptop and live instrumentation.Gunshae is the Panambient project of Canadian dubstep pioneer James āKumaā Graham and renowned Oboeist and DJ, Eve Mori.Gunshae is what happens when a classically trained musician and a notorious DJ with a penchant for improvising, jam on the sound of stuff and things. It's molten woodwinds and Satie references. It's a heavy drones and show tunes played by a band sitting on a veranda after too many mint julips. It's discrete music for the wifi generation.Every Gunshae recording is different. Every live performance is different. Fully improvised to the utmost extent."When people jump through time, they give themselves up to the rhyme and reason of the heavens."- Julian Cope

<itunes:author>Art of Beatz presents Hataken and Gunshae</itunes:author>	<itunes:subtitle>Have a good one-line slogan we can put up? Music was always my passion from a very you age. I fashioned my own home made instruments and was formally trained as a brass player in a local orchestra. At ten I purchased a Fender Strat and was engrossed in the guitar until the age of 15 when after holding down my first job for three months I bought a set of decks from Bassix. I started to play house, hard house and hip hop. I soon moved on to jungle and dnb after about two months. Was inspired by locals like Czech, Dabbler and Matty Pacific at parties that I was going to and listened to music so much that it alienated me from almost everyone who does not spin. I've also been able to meet alot of my heroes too, like Moby, Orbital and Juan Atkins. Thanks for listening to my mix/I also want to say thanks to Eve for letting me be on the show." : )

<itunes:author>Art of Beatz presents Poobah</itunes:author>	<itunes:subtitle>Independent music on community radio - www.coopradio.org</itunes:subtitle>	<itunes:duration>2:03:07</itunes:duration>	<itunes:keywords>atlanta, techno, poobah, southern playalistic, bass, art of beatz, vancouver, electronic dance music, cfro 102.7 fm, radio</itunes:keywords>

Apr. 17, 2008 with Nima

From humble beginnings playing records with friends at a local industry night, Nima has quickly established himself as a staple of the Vancouver club scene.
Do not be lulled by the honeyed vibes of Binhex's secret ambient and downtempo frequencies. Like some oversexed African python, Team Lounge's first lady of the fish uses musical hypnosis to better take liberties with her victims (often small defenseless animals). In the past, she has used her sorcery to pull off such sordid capers as Centre Neptune, XMAS 2, and Devolution, as well as ruling Victoria's Temple of Sound. Watch as she takes pleasure from the snake that once corrupted man by using past, present and future rave business to remind you that it's never over till you caught as many fish as you desire.

In the mid-90's, influenced by his friends who were early pioneers of the electronic scene, Jaxpratt found his calling. A regular on the dj circuit, playing numerous events and venues, Jaxpratt quickly made a name for himself thru his unique selection, mixing and feel for the room. He has gained a dedicated following and has since landed the Friday night residency at Mercury Lounge, undoubtedly one of Ottawa's top venues. His style is defined thru the pulsating 4/4 rhythm of house, dirty electro undertones and the ever-present element of soul.

Inkwell is the product of two minds from vastly different backgrounds; cinch and sidetrack bring their musical flavours together to produce a unique live set that is improvised and composed of entirely original material. Rocking mostly homemade gear, their live performance centers around a battle ready PC built into a turntable flight case and a knob box that looks like it?s from 1902. Minimal Techno is the backbone of their set, but it often veers in other more diverse territory without warning.

Dec. 13, 2007 with Kristina Childs

Kristina Childs is one of the hardest working DJs in the Northwest. As well as being a guest DJ at nearly every club in Seattle, Kristina has performed in Frankfurt, Bogotį, Medellin and various major US cities, sharing the stage with such notable artists as John Tejada, Joel Mull, Dan Bell, Speedy J, Thomas Fehlmann, Alex Under, Akufen, Kevin Saunderson, Bassnectar, Alex Smoke, Lusine, Jeff Samuel and Marcus Nicolai. She has held over 8 residencies since picking up her first record in 1999. Currently, Childs is a resident of Krakt, runs Plasmodium and is the Sponsorship Coordinator for Decibel. Her diligence in the Seattle scene has made her a popular Northwest DJ, combining excellent track selection and mixing skill with the energy and charisma it takes behind the decks to get dancefloors moving. Kristina is known primarily as a techno DJ, however you can hear her play everything from ambient to hip-hop, electro, disco, 80's or funk, depending on the venue. During the day you will find her neck-deep in graphic design, web design and print production for clients like Mackie, Backline Media, Publicis West and Laptop Battle.

BETTI FORDE (Stacked Tuesays/Stinkmitt) is the undisputed queen of Vancouver's underground music scene, holding residencies at the biggest and best underground parties in Vancouver including Stacked Tuesdays @ Celebrities Nightclub, Sin City Fetish Night @ 23 West Cordova, and Flygirl events such as Hershe Bar @ Sonar. Proving that there is no rest for the wickedest, Forde also maintains a critically acclaimed recording career as MC Betti Forde, part of Cochon Recording Artists StinkMitt (www.stinkmitt.com). Before becoming a pro-DJ and indie-rap star, she was a feminist academic, musicologist and activist, achieving a B.A. (Hon.) and an M.A. in Womens Studies and Gender Relations. She has programmed, played and promoted many fundraisers in tandem with other artists, and was one of the original creators and coordinators of Victoria's annual charity/awareness bash Groovefest and Vancouver's Sista'Hood.

Rolling like a ten ton juggernaut of desi bass nastiness, Sharmaji creates a bass-heavy, post-desi sound for the dancefloor that is as consistently powerful as it is diverse in background-- and completely NYC. His productions have been spun all through the states and UK by DJ's like Bobby Friction and Nihal, DaveQ, Shiva Soundsystem, Boomnoise, the Avaaz/G.O.O.N.D.A. crews, DJ Rekha, Mary Anne Hobbs, and countless others. As a DJ and percussionist he's brought his riddims to artists as diverse as Karsh Kale, Ming and FS, Tina Sugandh, JUNGLI, and Timbaland's hookstress RajeSwari, as well as for NYC's 9-years-strong Basment Bhangra party and hometown bhangra sensation Bikram Singh.
Dhol drummer, DJ, bad man producer, Sharmaji has laced us with an exclusive mix of dubstep like no other.

Geoff (Popkiller) became involved with electronic music in the mid-90s through his exposure to the Calgary rave scene and to artists such as Daft Punk and Bjork. Inspired by the sounds of house and techno music, and by local DJs Anwar, and Jon Delerious, he decided to take up deejaying as a hobby. Since then, he has gone on to play for many dancefloors, from small intimate events, to packed afterhours parties. Highlights of his career include headlining Vancouver's legendary Deepen night at the Lotus Sound Lounge, and playing a slot at this year's Soundwave festival on Vancouver Island. He's proud to have played alongside a number of touring deejays, including Fabric's Terry Francis, John Selway, Tiga, Freaks and Luke Solomon, Claude VonStroke, MSTRKRFT, Mr Barcode, Tyler Stadius, Brett Johnson, and Jay Tripwire. Now based in Vancouver, he is working on a new project called Popkiller, and is playing at various club and afterhours events.

I am just a normal guy born in Toronto who loves making music and working on all types of experiments in sound.
If you've ever lost yourself on a tropical dance floor, amid a haze of smoke and hypnotic riddims, chances are you were flexing to the Aklimatize bounce. Vancouver provides a solid home base of flourishing vocalists and musicians for this quickly maturing artist and producer. "I spent a couple months in Amsterdam tucked away writing beats, those songs came home with me to track vocals and and arrange at my studio mostly with local talents..." Like any movement, it starts with a few amazing people, developing from the ground up with Vancouver artists like Amalia (1LUV/Seqoya), Myles Bigelow (MO/B-Filthy), Hando Jin and Roxy Bebe (The Function), and Dr. J (1LUV).

Macabre Unit started as an outfit about 5 years ago and was originally started by 9ner, then known as k-9. He started it out to be a Grime outfit, 2-3 producers, and a handful of mc's. As time went on, the unit started to change its sound, becoming darker and more technical, this went down well with a lot of people, but naturally it didn't go down to well with some of the diehard fans. In the last 2 years they've been developing a sound which is darker than any kind of 140bpm music, we call it SKUM, the word says it all really, it's a very Drum and Bass influenced sound, along with a fusion of grime and dubstep.

Separately, they are major forces in the broken beat scene. Together, they slip into scattered beats and soulful grooves like they are one. Amalia Townsend is best known in Vancouver as the front-woman for Sekoya. Opolopo's 2003 debut album, Omnifarious, summed up the various elements that made up his musical universe to that point. Their music is best described through a quote by Herbie Hancock: "As much as I kept trying to make it funk, it kept integrating with these jazz elements, so after a while I stopped fighting."

Now, DJs from Ibiza to San Francisco, Costa Rica to Philadelphia are dropping his tracks and asking him to simply keep them coming.
Heavyweight jungle sounds from one of Canada's more prolific purveyors of angry drums and angrier bass. Having decamped to Vancouver from his Toronto home alongside fellow producer Queensyze, Code Blue can be found scoring films and commercials, adding that cinematic edge to a brand of jungle that will already be sucking out your blood by the time you've noticed what's going on.

Bringing the bass of garage and drum'n'bass together with the feel of electro and Miami booty shake, the passion of Bhangra and the madness of downtown Vancouver. Jesse was resident at the late, lamented Grime Sessions and is one of our favorite DJs. Expect the unexpected and then some and we let him loose to play whatever he damn well wants.

Sanctuary is celebrating not only ten years of stomping the dance floor but a new move to Friday night at the Lotus Sound Lounge, so Pandemonium will be joining us in studio to cause, just a little bit of trouble.

The infamous tag team Kuma and Eve (written up in URB 2005 for their dedication to ambient and sonic adventures), bring a four turntable session to the airwaves. The two produce cross-genre tunes together under the name Abunaii and Gunshae, but their excursions in ambience steer the great dub ship. They've performed up and down the west coast and in Japan, and continue to journey into sound with The Konspiracy Group's Pan Ambient series (4th installment set for 2008 in San Francisco). It's a party to lay down to, and EvilBear will bring the soundtrack.

Addicted to music from a very young age, Graham Hicks has fed his habit constantly through performance, production and a never-ending search for funky sounds both new and old. Behind the decks as Crown Vic, Graham plays a mix of 70s/80s/90s/00s mashup, shameless, ass-shaking funky breaks and dirty electro. A firm believer that music requires a sense of humour, his mixes often run new, fresh-off-the-boat tracks together with forgotten classics from the early days of dance music, with the odd Muppet Show sample or old Trooper b-side thrown in for good measure.

Carrying on a long tradition of Bristol bass science that runs from Mark Stewart through DJ Pinch, the Peverilst has brought dubstep to a new level with beats that make dubstep heads and techno lovers foam at the mouth with equal abandon. Whether its releasing tunes from the likes of Rob Smith and Monkeysteak or slinging wax behind the counter of Bristol's Rooted Records, Tom is an unsung hero of dubstep and we are honoured to have him sling an exlusive set of Bristol bassweight on the show.

We are pleased to help Vancouver New Music, by presenting a legend in North American ambient music, Kim Cascone. On Feb. 10 2007 at Video In Studios (1965 Main St.) he brought his new work 'Spectral Space' to the city. This performance focuses on the omnipresent din of our media culture, which provides a security blanket for many: when noise is present, we feel at ease; when it stops, we feel unease. In this paradoxical development of our cognitive apparatus we are now better able to assimilate more information at one time and decode its meaning. With 'Spectral Space' Cascone builds a foreground/midground/background sound-field through which sounds glint, shimmer, collide and implode within the fabric of noise.

What a better way to spend Winter Solstice, than with some warm island vibes.
Raised in Fiji, Dee Banse made his way from New Zealand to Japan where he fell in love with DJing. These days, he's taking his piano skills into the studio to create beautiful electronic music. Since 2002, he has been the second half of The Lava Project (with Jacob James Henry), making a lot of soulful electronic music. "Coming from the South Pacific, have always been into the laid back
dubby/funky sounds."

Beware of the cute blond ones as they are usually the most suspicious ones in the crowd. With over a decade's time logged behind the turntables, this hot tub frogman, political activist, and all-around bad man can be found all over Western North America pimping his filthy brand of electronic funk to unsuspecting young people everywhere. A founder of Vancouver electroniculture collective and downtempo legends, Team Lounge, and former co-owner of Victoria's Temple Of Sound record store, Quentin Rogers is a prime candidate to soundtrack your next party. Whether you're in need of some classic ambient to make you lie down and be counted or a rough and rugged ride through the lands of techno and electro (ask him for his infamous mix of Plastikman's 'Spastik' and 'Turn Me Loose' by Loverboy if you dare), the artist occasionally known as Hasslehoff is one to be reckoned with.
